Manos del Uruguay Yarns – make the world a better place!
Sandra hopes that a lot of women in Europe knit. She and her husband with their three children live in Fraile Muerto, a village in Uruguay with 3000 inhabitants, near the border to Brazil. While her husband works as a forester on the farms around the village, Sarah takes care of the children. Vor more than five years now she spins, twists and dyes yarns for the Manos del Uruguay cooperative. Since then they earn enough money to finance their daughters studies in Montevideo.
Sandra has to get up early, she works from 5 am to 1 pm. This allows her to take care of household duties and her youngest son (11 years). "Perhaps I could have moved to the city to find a job there, but then I would have had to leave my family behind. This was no option forme. Manos allows me to earn my income here in my home village", she says.
For her, the comradeship between the membes of the cooperatives is especially important. They help each other and stand by each other. "If one of the children gets sick, the others take over working shifts for the mother or help her with the household. This is very important for us", Sandra says. And you can feel how proud she is about her job.
Manos del Uruguay emphasize is on fairness and appropriate payment. Since 2009 the company, which was founded in 1968, is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), that ensures that the rights of small producers and individual workers are observed and guaranteed.
